Co-founder of an Unknown Software Company

written by Allan Branch on November 2nd, 2009

My Mom and me at LessConf
I'm the co-founder of an unknown software company. I don't have aspirations of being some widely known madman genius that develops massively popular products. I don't dream of Ferrari, jets and hookers. I want to know my users, I want them to know me and feel like they can email me with questions anytime.

I want to work with Steven Bristol until the internet goes away and it's replaced with microchips in your brain. Then Steve and I will find some other business to build. I want to stay inspired and continue to work with amazing people. I want our company to invest in people, artists, craftsmen, people with passion.

I want to ride my bike with my kids to school in the mornings and coach their sport teams in the afternoon. My goal is to embarrass them because I'm awkward and weird. I want to take more vacations, buy an RV and nomad around the US. I want work when I feel like it, not because I have to.

I don't want to build a company that has no flavor, no passion and is a lifeless machine. I want a company that people either love or love a lot. I am the co-founder of an unknown software company, I work too much, I am stressed and I can't imagine doing anything else.

Great post Allan. The second time is way better. I totally agree with you. You are creating an incredible business and an incredible life. Some people think it’s one or the other.

You and I want a lot of the same things. Bought an RV just last week in fact, and my company’s name is Agile Nomads, for that very reason.

LessConf was great as was this post. Keep up the good work.

PS. I’d like to see more done on LessProjects. I’ve been working on a PM tool of my own. Maybe we should team up to make LessProjects rock. ;)

Spot on! I was just thinking about this last week.

On the Internet one feels that if a business isn’t signing hundreds or thousands of new customers a day, then it’s about to go under.

But what about just running a profitable business and selling a quality product?

Ditto, but without the brain chips. When that happens I’m going to have to politely say no thanks…hackers.

Hi Geoffrey, I think we (web app builders) read these articles where the founder of an app sells out for 40 million dollars and we forget that we’re making a living working from home doing what we love. We need to enjoy the struggle of this livelihood or find a full time job.

My favorite line is, “I want to ride my bike with my kids to school in the mornings and coach their sport teams in the afternoon.”

Even if someone isn’t a parent, he can replace that line with his ultimate passion (I want to surf w/ my friends all day…) and understand the your message.

Time is our only inventory. I really enjoyed your post.

    Congratulations are in order.

It’s too bad that “I hope you’re happy” is usually used with sarcasm because I hope you’re happy.

Allen – this afternoon you were just ‘the guy who answered my question on less accounting’ really quickly. And now I know what you look like, know what your mum looks like and know some very cool stuff about you. I LOVED this post Allen and I hope there will be ways lots of ways we can do business together in the future. Lovin what you guys are putting out. Keep up the great work.

would you mind if I use this as my manifesto? (seriously) can I have your permission? I’ll replace Steven Bristol with my bestfriend’s name…

The sad thing is, I actually do dream of Ferrari’s, jets and hookers.
